When Calls the Heart DVD Review

ABOUT WHEN CALLS THE HEART
When Calls the Heart is the story of Elizabeth Thatcher (Drayton), a young teacher accustomed to her high society life, who receives her first classroom post in a prairie town in the Western Frontier lead by headstrong coalminer widows Abigail (Loughlin) and Frances (Smart). She is determined to prove to her family that she is brave enough to live on her own, but struggles with her own fears and doubts. When she discovers her late Aunt Elizabeth's (Grace) secret diary, Elizabeth learns she was a pioneer woman herself, a teacher in the frontier who struggled with prairie life and fell in love with a Royal Canadian Mountie (Amell). Inspired by her aunt's hopeful words and unfaltering determination, Elizabeth decides to embark on her own adventure, using the diary as her guide and family friend Edward, another Mountie (Sharman), as her support. MY REVIEW
I’ve read all of Janette Oke’s Canadian West series which starts with the book When Calls the Heart. I really loved this series and while this DVD When Calls the Heart is a lot alike the book it is different also. I wish the DVD was more like the book. In the book it just tells the story of Elizabeth and Wynn but the DVD tells of two separate stories. The Elizabeth of the book is the Aunt in this DVD while another Elizabeth is the niece. They both are from privileged families and both want to be school teachers, both ends up teaching in the Wild West. Another thing both start to like Canadian Mounties.  It’s like a story told twice in this movie.
I do love the characters and the acting is tremendously good. The settings and scenery are excellent. This could be a 5-star DVD if it only had one story line.
Even though I don’t like the two story lines I still think this is an excellent DVD to buy and watch. Great love story.

Unspoken by Dee Henderson A REVIEW

ABOUT UNSPOKEN
Charlotte Graham is at the center of the most famous kidnapping in Chicago history.

The task force of FBI and local cops found her two abductors, killed them, rescued her, but it took four very long years. The fact she was found less than three miles from her home, had been there the entire time, haunts them. She's changed her identity, found a profession she loves, and rebuilt her life.

She's never said a word--to the cops, to her doctors, to family--about those four years.

A family legacy has brought her back to Chicago where a reporter is writing a book about the kidnapping. The cops who worked the case are cooperating with him. Her options are limited: Hope the reporter doesn't find the full truth, or break her silence about what happened. And her silence is what has protected her family for years.

Bryce Bishop doesn't know her past, he only knows she has coins to sell from her grandfather's estate--and that the FBI director for the Chicago office made the introduction. The more he gets to know Charlotte, the more interested he becomes, an interest encouraged by those closest to her. But nothing else is working in his favor--she's decided she is single for life, she struggles with her faith, and she's willing to forego a huge inheritance to keep her privacy. She's not giving him much of an opening to work with.

Charlotte wants to trust him. She needs to tell him what happened. Because a crime cops thought was solved, has only opened another chapter...

MY REVIEW
Unspoken by Dee Henderson isn’t one of my favorite books. I LOVE the O’Malley series and it is so well written. Unspoken started our really slow. It talks a lot about Bryce’s coin business and the coins Charlotte sells him. It is very boring for people who don’t know or like coins. It really took a lot to get into this book.
I love how well Bryce treated and took care of Charlotte. He married her even though he didn’t love her, because he thought it was the right thing. I really don’t see many people if any who would marry someone just to help them.
Charlotte inherits a lot of money and doesn’t want it and wants someone else to help her give it away.
This was a really long story and I did enjoy the last part. I like how tender and loving Bryce is to Charlotte even though I don’t think a person would be without loving them.
This was an O.K. book, but if you want to read some fantastic books of Dee’s read her earlier books.

MY REVIEW
The Promise Birth of the Messiah from Glorious Films is one of the best Christmas animated DVDs I have ever seen. What is even better is this movie is a musical and very, very well done. The whole DVD  tells the story from when Joseph and Mary met, get engaged and up until Jesus is born and they see Simeon in the Temple.
The Promise is a very uplifting, precious story and it tells the birth story of Jesus as it actually happened in the Bible.
The scenes and costumes are very realistic. Clara Scott and Michael Daniel Murphy do a great job as Mary and Joseph. Their singing voices are so superb. This DVD The Promise is for the whole family, from your youngest to your oldest family members. It can and will be enjoyed by all.
I highly recommend this DVD The Promise-Birth of the Messiah. A new Christmas movie to become a classic.

MY REVIEW
I really love Christmas movies and wanted this to be so good, but……….Coming home for Christmas is not a very interesting movie. There is no depth of character. It’s like a silly movie about two sisters having a fight and then  the whole family starts having trouble for years. No one is sorry or want to help each other until the parents break up then they start to think about what’s been done.
One thing I did like about Coming Home For Christmas was the girls decided to try to get their parents back together and want to have Christmas in the old family house. Since someone else is living there they have to find a way to get him to let them celebrate Christmas at his house. That was a fun part.
If you love Christmas movies and just want to have a simple movie to watch you will like this one.

Still Lolo by Lauren Scruggs with Marcus Brotherton A REVIEW

In December 2011, Lauren (“LoLo”) Scruggs, a 23-year-old fashion journalist, suffered a sudden injury that made headlines around the world. She had been on a short flight to look at Christmas lights and, upon exiting the small plane, was hit by the still-moving propeller blade. A frantic 911 call, several major surgeries, and thousands of prayers later: Lauren lived. But she lost her left hand and left eye. And she had to face some incredibly difficult questions: What kind of future will I have? Where is God in all this pain? Will anyone ever be able to love me now? In Still LoLo, Lauren speaks out for the first time since her accident. She and her family reveal what really happened that night, what Lauren’s life is like today, what got them through their journey toward healing, and how they conquered all odds to persevere as a family. It’s a compelling and fiercely beautiful story of faith, determination, and staying true to who you are—no matter what.

MY REVIEW
The book Still Lolo by Lauren Scruggs, her family with Marcus Brotherton is an O.K. book. I love true stories of people overcoming tragedies, but felt like this book somehow wasn’t strong enough or had enough heart. Don’t get me wrong I know Lauren had a great struggle and had something horrific happen to her.
The things I didn’t appreciate in this book was the back story. I know you need back story but it was almost ¾ of this book. I At times it seemed to go on and on. In Still Lolo it didn’t give out enough details of the accident and the recovery period. Also Lauren is quite conceited about her looks and I think she should be happier with the sparing of her life instead of how she looks and how she will get along in life.
Still Lolo is an easy read and didn’t take me long, but I was just looking for more substance. It does have some colorful pictures and they were interesting. I really can’t recommend reading this book unless you like long stories that only talk of the past and not what the real story is suppose to be about.

Outlaw by Ted Dekker~ A REVIEW~

ABOUT OUTLAW
The story of how I, Julian Carter, and my precious two-year old son, Stephen, left Atlanta Georgia and found ourselves on a white sailboat, tossed about like a cork on a raging sea off of Australia's northern tip in 1963, is harrowing.

But it pales in comparison to what happened deep in the jungle where I was taken as a slave by a savage tribe unknown to the world. Some places dwell in darkness so deep that even God seems to stay away.

There, my mind was torn in two by the gods of the earth. There, one life ended so another could begin.

Some will say I was a fool for making the choices I made. But they would have done the same. They, too, would have embraced death if they knew what I knew, and saw through my eyes.

My name is Julian and this is my story. But more, it is the story of my son who was born to change the world.

From deep in the impenetrable jungles where New York Times bestselling author Ted Dekker was born and raised, comes OUTLAW, an epic adventure of two worlds that perhaps only he could write. Full of harrowing twists, sweeping violence, and wild love, Outlaw takes us beyond the skin of this world to another unseen.

ABOUT TED DEKKER
TED DEKKER is a New York Times bestselling author of more than twenty novels with a total of more than 5 million books in print. He is known for thrillers that combine adrenaline-laced plots with incredible confrontations between good and evil.

MY REVIEW
Outlaw by Ted Dekker is a brilliant read, but different than his other books. Ted describes the places and people so well you feel like you are there and experiencing these same things.
Outlaw is a story about a young woman Julian whom had a dream and it occurred very often. She believed it was telling her to take her son and go to a different land to be a missionary.  They were involved in a shipwreck and that is where the story starts.
Ted has said that Outlaw is a book closer to his real self than all of the others. One part of Outlaw talks about everyone having two selves. One part right now we are putting on costumes like being a mother, doctor, teacher, son, and that self can be killed, but our other true self is our spiritual self which will live forever. It is a very sweet, touching look at what we really are and how we should contemplate on this.
One of my favorite lines in Outlaw are these words “The roles you identify with are not the true you, they are only the costume you wear for a short time.”
This is a book that I wish everyone would read. I highly recommend it. Another excellent book by Ted Dekker.

Hugs and Kisses (x's and o's) CD REVIEW

ABOUT HUGS AND KISSESS (x's and o's)
A variety album with familiar melodies and my original title song. I sing and play the saxophone in the wonderful style of the Big Band Era. The concept for this album was inspired by the memory of my grandmother who would always sign her notes and birthday cards with xxxxoooo (hugs and kisses). I was reminded of this a couple of years ago as my dear cousin carries on the tradition. The CD is featured in a nostalgic jacket just like the old LP's. The title song is dedicated to my wife Laura, with all my love! ...xo, Curtis

MY REVIEW
Hugs and Kisses (x’s and o’s) is a wonderful collection of Big Band Era music. This CD just came out and it would make an excellent present for yourself or family. If you love Big Band music this CD is for you.
Curtis is a very talented  musician, singer, entertainer and songwriter. The CD contains fifteen songs that we have all heard (well fourteen) and many are favorites of ours. The first song Hugs and Kisses (x’s and o’s) was written by Curtis for his beautiful wife.
Hugs and Kisses has a song for everyone. You will find yourself singing along and enjoying yourself when you listen to this beautiful CD.
Curtis has a very smooth voice and he is flawless in his music abilities. I can’t believe this wonderful CD is going at such a great price for fifteen songs. The music, Curtis’ voice and songs he sings gives me the feeling of joy and peacefulness. The tone and quality of this CD are excellent.
Here’s a quote I thought was beautiful and fit with this CD.

~God sent his Singers upon earth
With songs of sadness and of mirth,
That they might touch the hearts of men,
And bring them back to heaven again.
~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow~
Highly recommend this CD-Hugs and Kisses (x’s and o’s)

The Governess of Highland Hall*A REVIEW

THE GOVERNESS OF HIGHLAND HALL

Worlds lie between the marketplaces of India and the halls of a magnificent country estate like Highland Hall. Will Julia be able to find her place when a governess is neither upstairs family nor downstairs help?

Missionary Julia Foster loves working alongside her parents, ministering and caring for young girls in India. But when the family must return to England due to illness, she readily accepts the burden for her parents’ financial support. Taking on a job at Highland Hall as governess, she quickly finds that teaching her four privileged, ill-mannered charges at a grand estate is more challenging than expected, and she isn’t sure what to make of the estate’s preoccupied master, Sir William Ramsey.

Widowed and left to care for his two young children and his deceased cousin Randolph’s two teenage girls, William is consumed with saving the estate from the financial ruin. The last thing he needs is any distraction coming from the kindhearted-yet-determined governess who seems to be quietly transforming his household with her persuasive personality, vibrant prayer life, and strong faith.

While both are tending past wounds and guarding fragile secrets, Julia and William are determined to do what it takes to save their families—common ground that proves fertile for unexpected feelings. But will William choose Julia’s steadfast heart and faith over the wealth and power he needs to secure Highland Hall’s future?

MY REVIEW
The Governess of Highland Hall by Carrie Turansky is such an fantastic, exciting book to read. I love the way Carrie captures the feel and excitement of living and running a large estate. You feel like you are there.
What caught me the most was how loving and kind Julia is toward to family and those she works for. She has a quick wit and also at times a quick tongue, but is so kind.
Julia takes care of William’s children and his two nieces and what a job that is, but she does it with such love and ease as if she were made to do that.
William has been hurt desperately and it is hard for him to trust any woman and he believes strongly that upper and lower class people should not become involved. Then his sister is drawn to the family gardener. Julia sides with Williams sister. Sparks begin to fly, not only because Sarah (Williams sister) likes the gardener, but because William starts to have feelings for Julia. That could never work out, but could it?
I really enjoyed reading this romantic, suspenseful book. Where you can find romance, trust and forgiveness all in one.
Highly recommend.

MY REVIEW
Singularity by Steven James is an interesting book, but not a favorite of mine. I did enjoy the suspense of Singularity and the story line was O.K. Singularity was a book that just didn’t hold my interest.
I think Steven James has a great mind for action and the torturous parts. That was the part of the book that kept me reading. My favorite chapter and it was very riveting was called Venom.
I guess the things I didn’t like in this book were the very technical descriptions and also the descriptions of Las Vegas. I think Steven James just went on to much with these two things.
Some people will enjoy this book, but it’s not for the faint of heart. Some parts are pretty gruesome.  I have read some other books by Steven James and this isn’t one of my favorites.

Audrey Bunny by Angie Smith with illustrations by Breezy Brookshire is a beautiful, beautiful book. In the story and also illustrations.  The story is so sweet and loving that children and parents alike will just fall in love with it.
Audrey Bunny had a mark over her heart and thought no one could ever love her. Finally she was chosen by a little girl, but Audrey tried to always hid her mark. The ending is so delightful and touching.
The illustrations are so precious and colorful that your child will just love to look at the pictures again and again.

THE ACTORS

Lynn Whitfield (Vanessa), one of the most respected members of the African American acting community, is an Emmy Award-winning actress who is well known for the authenticity she brings to her portrayal of women from all walks of life. She vaulted to international fame in the 1991 HBO biopic "The Josephine Baker Story," portraying the legendary Civil Rights fighter. Her performance earned an Emmy Award as "Outstanding Lead Actress in a Special or Miniseries." After taking some time off for her greatest role, mother to daughter Grace with Josephine Baker director and former husband, the late Brian Gibson, Whitfield starred opposite Bill Cosby in "The Cosby Mysteries" (NBC, 1994). Lynn has won five NAACP Image Awards and four nominations for her work in film and television, including "Redemption: The Stan Tookie Williams Story" (2004) co-starring Jamie Foxx. She attracted a new generation of fans in two of the Disney Channel's highest-rated movies, "The Cheetah Girls" (2003) and "The Cheetah Girls 2" (2006). Other select feature film roles include the Chris Rock vehicle, Head of State (2003); Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion (2006); Mama I Want To Sing (2008), a remake of the off-Broadway musical; Kings of the Evening (2008); The Rebound (2010); and Things Fall Apart (2011), produced by and co-starring rapper-actor 50 Cent. She stars as Vanessa in KING'S FAITH, a faith-based film centered on the values of faith and family.

Before he decided to focus on acting, Crawford Wilson (Brendan) was nationally ranked in tennis and a Wilhelmina model. The acting bug took over at age twelve, and he moved to New York City from his family's home in Memphis to pursue his dream of being on the big screen. He later moved to Los Angeles where he landed his first big job: a recurring role CBS's "Judging Amy, playing the boyfriend of Amy's daughter. Crawford's voiceover career took off as well, beginning with the role of young Rodney (Ewan McGregor) in the Fox animated film Robots. Today Crawford continues his voiceover work with recurring roles on hit cartoon shows like "Avatar" and "Batman." Recently television credits include the lead role of Dwayne Dill in the Disney Channel movie, "Hatching Pete." He just completed filming for an NBC movie, "Secrets of the Mountain," playing the lead role of Jake.

Award-winning actor James McDaniel's (Mike) career has spanned more than three decades. He is best known for his role as Lt. Arthur Fancy (for which he won both Peabody and Screen Actor's Guild awards) on the long-running television show, "NYPD Blue." James won both an Emmy Award and a Peabody Award for "Edge of America," a Showtime movie that he also produced. Other television shows include "Hill Street Blues," "LA Law," "Cop Rock," and "Detroit 187." He also was in mini-series from Alex Haley ("Queen") and Steven Spielberg ("Taken"). His film roles include Sunshine State, Malcolm X, and The Road to Galveston. A stage veteran, James recently returned to New York in a successful run of an adaptation of Carson McCullers' "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter." He also appeared in a new play by Pulitzer Prize winning author Suzan-Lori Parks, "Father Comes Home from the Wars." His most notable previous stage productions include "A Soldier's Play," "Before It Hits Home," and "Six Degrees of Separation."

Kayla Compton (Natalie) moved to Los Angeles to pursue her longtime dream of acting and singing. She quickly had success and played Monica on the HBO hit, "Entourage." She also appeared on TNT's "Perception." In KING'S FAITH, she plays Natalie, the popular high school cheerleader with a past she is trying to hide. Raised in Jacksonville, Florida, Kayla has wanted to be a performer since she was a young girl. Singing was her main passion until her drama teacher in high school told her she should really look into acting, a craft she quickly fell in love with.

Brandon Correa (Eli)  spent most of his life (from ages 4-18) in foster care and group homes. The trials and difficulties he faced would later become his motivation to pursue the arts and allow him to connect to his first major acting role as Eli in KING'S FAITH. While he is new to the acting world, Brandon is an entertainer who spends much of his time writing lyrical music and performing hip hop and rap music.

MY REVIEW
King’s Faith on DVD is an excellent movie full of action, suspense, faith and love. It tells a story of Brendan who had no family and got involved in a bad life with many bad decisions.  In was in and out of many foster families and finally got put in a juvenile penitentiary. While there he became a Christian. When he gets out he has his last chance.
Friends from  Brendan’s past look him up and try to get him to become involved again. They try to pressure  Brendan by going after his new friends.
What will become of him and his faith now that he’s out?
This is a very entertaining DVD and full of action. It captured my young adults attention and they really enjoyed it.  A really nice movie to watch with the whole family. Even though it is a Christian film the acting and scenes are very professionally done.
King’s Faith tells us that with Jesus we have second chances and life can be good and fulfilling. You don’t have to be angry all of the time or out to get everyone. I highly recommend King’s Faith.

MY REVIEW
Ted Dekker is one of my most favorite authors and when I get a chance to read and review one of his books I feel blessed. I’ve read Blessed Child years ago and loved it so I read it again to review it.
This is a story about three people and what they went through and how they came to love each other. Caleb is a sweet, compassionate boy who amazes and surprises everyone he meets. He just loves the Lord so much that it just shines through him. He is close to the Lord because he is so innocent.  Jason saves Caleb from his home before soldiers come and destroy it. Jason has a very sad, hurting past in which he lost his young son and wife. He just can’t love God because Jason believes he doesn’t care for us humans.
Leiah is a very scarred person on the inside and on the outside. She doesn’t trust or love anyone.
Then these three come together in a horrible run for their lives. Why is someone after Caleb and will they stop when they reach the US? Full of suspense, love, forgiveness and the sweet love of our Lord.
Highly recommend this wonderful book. Blessed Child by Ted Dekker and Bill Bright.

MY REVIEW
This is the first book I’ve read of Chris Pennington and for the most part I really enjoyed it. I believe Chris will be became a great author in time.
I love end time stories. Rapture’s Rain takes a different kind of road than the normal rapture stories and for the most part I really thought it was a neat story. I just didn’t care for the ending. I thought it lacked a little something, but don’t think this should keep you from reading this wonderful book.
Another thing I didn’t care for in the story is some of the language contained cuss words. I really don’t think they are necessary even when someone is upset or something really horrific happens.
I think this story should be considered a fictional story instead of end times story. I enjoyed reading Rapture’s Rain and recommend it for you also.  It really captured and kept my attention and it was very well put together except for the ending.

God's Colonel by D.I. Telbat A Review

ABOUT THE BOOK
As America collapses and the Antichrist rises as supreme from the carnage, a broken family struggles to survive the devastation. They become entangled with the non-compliant underground Christians, and are caught in the crossfire of End Time plagues that strike the ungodly with fiery judgment.

Emit Dross, a runaway and criminal, returns as an imposter to the community of his troubled youth. Upon arrival, he finds that his hometown has become a military outpost for the Global Security Forces One World Government—the GSF. He soon realizes that his stolen identity may be an asset, though he finds himself tested greatly. Is it too late for Emit to heed the words of the Underground Christian Broadcast playing on the radio stolen from his deceased father?

Correctional Officer Gray Dross agrees to work for and bow to the GSF, therefore he experiences comfort while others struggle to survive. Inside, he is full of hatred and bitterness toward his brother Emit's rebellious youth, and he abandons what once was important to him. Will he continue to live for himself while thousands perish under his guard?

Flo Dross finds solace in her daughter and a stranger who is left at their farm by security officers. Her heartache is lost in the shadow of the 10-year conflict between her brothers. As tensions rise globally, Flo finds her mother's most treasured possession. Will Flo fall back on what her late parents taught them?

The guillotine is thirsty for the blood of the non-compliant Christians. They are under the command of the secretive Colonel O'Regan, who answers to the powerful, demonic General Norvasso, whose eyes are set on the global leadership of New Roma.

The future seems bleak, but the daring perseverance of the unwavering few seeks to salvage the faithful, whose flickering light is becoming ever dimmer. When death seems the only end to the chaos around them, someone guarding a deep secret may be the only hope for the remaining underground believers.

God's Colonel is a 48,000 word End Times Novel by D.I. Telbat, with cover art by Sean Johnson. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
D. I. Telbat is a Christian author who writes in many genres, but especially Christian action-adventure, and suspense. He wrote his first novel at age 14, and hasn't stopped since!

Telbat's Tablet, David's website (http://ditelbat.com), offers free weekly Christian adventure and suspense short stories, or serialized novels, to entertain, but also to bring attention to the Christian Persecuted Church. Because of his interest in the Persecuted Church and missions, many of D.I. Telbat's stories are about persecuted Christians, their hardships, their sacrifices, and their rescues. Several of his novels include espionage, as well as spiritual warfare.

On his site, he also shares his author reflections, writing experiences, and occasional challenges to the Christian church, and there is a complete biography, testimonials, and publishing credits and honors. The credits include both print and digital publications, anthologies, and a 2nd place People's Choice Award with print magazine, The Storyteller. (Also, you can now follow David Telbat on Twitter @DITelbat.)

D.I. Telbat's e-novels--Dark Liaison, A Christian Suspense Novel, Book One in the COIL Series, Dark Hearted, Book Two in the COIL Series, Dark Rule, Book Three, Sea Scribe, a High Seas Suspense, and Jaguar Dusk, a Special Forces Christian Novel--are available from Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com, as well as other retailers. Book Four in the COIL Series will be out late 2013.

Getting into trouble with the law as a young man became a turning point in David's life. The Lord used that experience to draw David into a personal relationship with Him. Re-focusing his life for Christ, David now seeks to honor God with his life and his writing.

David studied writing in college, and worked in the newspaper field, but now he is doing what he loves: writing and ministry. He is involved with several ministries, which includes writing and directing Christian plays. When not busy with ministry, he focuses on writing novels, short stories, blog posts, and prison ministry newsletters.

He has kept his home office in the Northwest U.S. where his assistant, Dee, lives and helps with his writing and editing needs.

There is no redemption without sacrifice.

MY REVIEW
I’m totally mesmerized by D.I. Telbat’s books, but this one is the best yet. I could read his books every day and not get enough.
God’s Colonel is an End’s Time book about the antichrist taking over and making everyone pledge allience to him or be killed. In God’s Colonel Emit was a trouble maker growing up in a Christian family and when the End Times events started happening he knows what is going on and works on the Lord’s side.
This book is also about Emit’s brother and sister and how they all become Christians as this book is starting and how they serve the Lord and help other Christians to escape death.
I found this book totally fascinating and didn’t want it to end, but couldn’t read it fast enough. God’s Colonel is exciting, captivating and full of escaping, but also how the Lord has all things in control.
Really love this book and know you would love it. So I’m highly recommending it.
