Deep Shadows by Vannetta Chapman A Review

ABOUT DEEP SHADOWS
(The Remnant Book 1)

All It Takes Is One Night to Plunge the World into Darkness

Life in Abney, Texas, is predictable and safe--until the night a massive solar flare wipes out all modern technology.

Shelby Sparks, novelist and single mom, had one goal: to provide for her diabetic son. In the wake of this global disaster, her mission hasn't changed. Only now, medication is a priceless commodity and the future resembles an apocalyptic nightmare.

Max Berkman and Shelby were once sweethearts, but he lost his chance at claiming her love years ago. When the abrupt loss of power ushers him into a leadership role, he rises to the occasion. But his highest priority--to keep Shelby and her son safe--could prove to be the biggest challenge of all.

As the brilliant northern lights give way to deep shadows, Max and Shelby's faith will be tested like never before. Only one rule remains: Find a way to survive.

In this first book in an eerily plausible dystopian series, a memorable cast of characters must navigate a familiar world thrown into chaos.

MY REVIEW
I really loved this book. It is an intriguing novel. I love the idea of a story showing how the world be in trouble if all modern technology was wiped out.
Just imagine your newer cars wouldn’t start, no  trucks would be coming in to restock the shelves in the stores. The gas pumps wouldn’t work because the electricity pushed the gas up to the pumps. The same with the water system.
What if this happened and you or your family had a medical problem. You wouldn’t be able to get your medicines, or the care you need.
Those are just some of the problems in this novel. So Shelby, her son, Which has a medical problem and there friend Max, plus other numerous friends find ways to get around all of these problems. Some of the people will work together, but there are a few who don’t care how they get the things they need, by stealing or murdering. Anything goes.
This is a marvelous novel and I love it. Can’t wait until book 2 is out. So many things need answers in this story. Really loved it and will highly recommend it. A book you need to read in 2016!

MY REVIEW
Ashes of Eden is a good movie that can teach us lots of things.
I must admit that the beginning was very slow. I know you have to get all of the back story, but it could have moved along quicker.
A police officer is trying to raise her two sons alone, but is having lots of financial  troubles. Her older son, Red gets in with the wrong crowd, but wants to help his mother. So he steals drugs to sell. So his troubles get worse and worse.
His mother tries to keep him out of trouble with the law, which is her first mistake. Then Red gets kicked out of school and lands up in trouble again. So his mother kicks him out of the house.
He gets into trouble deeper and deeper. People are being killed and he is on the run.
The conclusion of Ashes of Eden is really thrilling. You will be sitting on the edge of your seat. I like the ending of the movie and will recommend it for all. It saddens me to see people get involved in the drug trade or crime. Sometimes it seems there’s no way out.  I like the theme No man can serve two masters. Really good.
One thing I didn't care for was the use of the language. I don't believe movies need swearing. This movie blocked out the swear words. I don't think that is any better than swearing. Just my opinion.

Awakened DVD Review

ABOUT AWAKENED
Newspaper reporter Jacob Harker (Rob Boltin) loses his job, forcing he and his wife, Haley (Gwendolyn Edwards), to move into a small rental house owned by Webster Cain (Michael Monks). In the process of moving in, Jacob discovers a discarded audio recording of 60’s blues singer Carol James (Hannah Hughes). Captivated by the voice on the recording, Jacob conducts an investigation into Carol James’ life and death. Through his pursuit, Jacob becomes haunted by an evil spirit. While the spirit seductively persuades Jacob, drawing him deeper and deeper into its own malicious plot, the spirit attacks and terrorizes Haley, creating both fear and distrust in the Harker’s home. Haley sees her husband turning into someone less recognizable each day. How can a marriage survive such attack, deception, and evil? Can the faith of one help restore the condition of another?

MY REVIEW
This isn’t my favorite kind of movie to watch, but I said I would review it so I did.
Awakened is about an evil spirit that takes over a man. All around it is an O.K. movie. Some scary scenes but not extremely so. The actors are fair and the story line is intriguing.
The story takes place when a couple move into a smaller home, because of lack of work they have to downsize. Jacob cleans out the basement and finds an old recording of a 1960’s jazz singer. He can’t quit listening to the recording and then he starts to hear her voice.
Jacob’s wife, Haley goes to church off and on, but Jacob doesn’t go.
The things I didn’t like about this DVD is the part of church and things the Pastor said are to few. Most of this movie is about the haunting. I feel to fight spiritual forces you must be more grounded in the Lord and very close to Him. Since Jacob didn’t have a relationship with the Lord, I don’t see how the evil spirit left him. When the spirit left the wife said a few things, but nothing really deep. I know this is a made up movie, but I don’t find it very realistic. Fighting spiritual battles is very serious business. I don’t feel Awakening showed that.
If you watch this I caution you not to let younger children watch. I believe this movie could have been so much better with more praying of the actors and more church teaching/preaching.
