High Desert Haven by Lynnette Bonner* A Review

ABOUT HIGH DESERT HAVEN

Everything in Nicki’s life depends on the answer.

Oregon Territory, 1887

When her husband dies in a mysterious riding accident, Nicki Trent is left with a toddler and a rundown ranch. Determined to bring her ranch back from the brink of death, Nicki hires handsome Jason Jordan to help. But when William, her neighbor, starts pressing for her hand in marriage, the bank calls in a loan she didn’t even know about, bullets start flying, and a burlap dummy with a knife in its chest shows up on her doorstep, Nicki wonders if this ranch is worth all the trouble.

To make matters worse, terrible things keep happening to her neighbors. When her friend’s homestead is burned to the ground and William lays the blame at Jason’s feet, Nicki wonders how well she knows her new hand…and her own heart.

A desperate need. Malicious adversaries. Enticing love.
Step into a day when outlaws ran free, the land was wild, and guns blazed at the drop of a hat.

ABOUT LYNNETTE BONNER
Born and raised in Malawi, Africa. Lynnette Bonner spent the first years of her life reveling in warm equatorial sunshine and the late evening duets of cicadas and hyenas. The year she turned eight she was off to Rift Valley Academy, a boarding school in Kenya where she spent many joy-filled years, and graduated in 1990.

That fall, she traded to a new duet--one of traffic and rain--when she moved to Kirkland, Washington to attend Northwest University. It was there that she met her husband and a few years later they moved to the small town of Pierce, Idaho.

During the time they lived in Idaho, while studying the history of their little town, Lynnette was inspired to begin the Shepherd's Heart Series with Rocky Mountain Oasis.

Marty and Lynnette have four children, and currently live in Washington where Marty pastors a church.

MY REVIEW
This is the second book in The Shepherd’s Heart series and after reading it I want to read the first book and any that come after it. High Desert Haven is an excellent book full of love, mystery, intrigue, death and happiness. I will be adding High Desert Haven to my favorite books for 2012 and giving it a 5-star rating.
To me Nicki was a very unselfish, precious follower of Jesus in this fantastic book. In every page from the first to the last Nicki puts her family, her husband, son and friends ahead of herself. After her husband dies even though she only married him to help her family and didn’t really love him she cared deeply for him and wanted to keep his ranch going for their son.
When the larger ranches tried pushing her off her ranch and the other smaller ranches she didn’t give in. Nicki ran an ad for a ranch foreman because she didn’t know anything about ranches. Then Jason, a new Christian, comes and things start happening not all for the good, but he doesn’t want Nicki to give up without a fight even when the bank calls in her loan. How will she make it? Will she find how God wants her to survive? Will Nicki give in  to pressures to sell and marry the next door rancher or will her heart and head win out and do the right thing?
I really love this book and so glad I read it. Lynnette is such a brilliant author, I’m glad I found her writing because she is one of my new favorites. So I HIGHLY recommend this book High Desert Haven.

Book Review Unclaimed Legacy by Deborah Heal

ABOUT UNCLAIMED LEGACY
"I call it time-surfing," Abby said. "It's like being there,
except no one can see or hear us."

"Whatever you call it," John said, "that was crazy--what we just did.
Beyond realistic. I mean, I was in that guy's head
and knew everything he was thinking."

Abby's weird computer program is working again. And it comes in handy when they agree to help the Old Dears next door with their family tree. Except Abby and John learn more about one of the ladies' ancestors than they ever wanted to know. Convicted in 1871 of murder and arson, Reuben Buchanan is a blight on the family's reputation. But was he really guilty? Abby and John get inside the mind of a murderer to find out.

But while they're rummaging around in the Old Dears' family history, they discover the truth of God's promise to bless a thousand generations... and a legacy waiting to be reclaimed.

ABOUT DEBORAH HEAL
Deborah Heal is a former high school English teacher who loves reading, gardening, and learning about southern Illinois history. She is married and has three grown children, three grandchildren, and two canine buddies named Digger and Scout. Today she lives in the St. Louis Metro East area, but for many years she lived not far from the setting of her first novel, Time and Again. In Unclaimed Legacy, the second in the trilogy, Abby, John, and Merrideth must clear the name of a man wrongly accused of murder--in a 150-year-old case! The author is currently working on book three.

MY REVIEW
Unclaimed Legacy is book 2 in Time and Again series and it’s very enjoyable to read. The characters are all the same with a couple of new ones and the setting is mostly the same, but in a new small town.
Abby is still working on her summer project of helping tutor a young girl whom is doing well even though she is going through a lot of family problems.
Even though I said this is a nice book to me it’s to much the same. I know the story is about different people, but the time surfing on the computer from different houses seems all the same to me. This book is just continuing from book one almost like one continuing book. I grew tired of the same story line even though it was different. Hard to explain unless you have read the book.
I also found Abby’s “boyfriend” tiring with his quick escapes from any kind of emotions. Like holding hands, showing affection, quick kiss etc. You can control yourself without completely staying away from someone.
This book is sweet for younger girls and Abby would be a good role model for them. If you like this kind of book it is a quick, easy read.

Book Giveaway and Review of Time and Again by Deborah Heal

ABOUT TIME AND AGAIN
Charlotte of Miles Station
When Abby chose tutoring an "economically disadvantaged adolescent" as her college service project, she didn't realize how difficult her summer would be. Merrideth, her 11-year-old student, has been sullen and depressed ever since her parents' divorce, especially since she was forced to move to the dilapidated old house her mother inherited. When Merrideth's dad sends her a top-of-the-line computer to make up for his absence in her life, she and Abby discover a weird program on it that invites them to "Take a Virtual Tour" of various houses around the world, including, amazingly, Merrideth's own house.
And then they discover the program is more than a simple visual experience. Much more. Abby and Merrideth find they can "time-surf" to any date, including 1858 when the house was new and young Charlotte Miles lived there. By locking onto Charlotte, they can get into her head--know her thoughts and feelings--and experience her world, even when she gets on the train to attend the Lincoln/Douglas Debate.
Watching from a distance as Charlotte faces the challenges in her life, including the hardships of the Civil War, gives Abby and Merrideth new perspective on their own problems. Time and Again is a story told in the past and in the present. A story of self-discovery and faith.

MY REVIEW
Time and Again Charlotte of Miles Station by Deborah Heal is a fantastic read. It is a great story to read for any age group, but I think young ladies would really enjoy it . It is quite a nice clean story without violence.
This story has many themes to it. Divorce, neglected children, history, present day, love, family.
Abby is a young lady who wants to tutor a young girl for a college project she at first wonders if she is cut out to help a girl who has so many problems and attitudes. Merrideth feels lonely since her mother divorced her dad and she doesn’t know why and they also moved very far away to a very small town. So Merrideth quits caring and just eats and watches T.V.
Abby tries to bring her out of herself and they get into a computer program that carries them back over 100  years to the people who use to live in the house that they live in now. It is really a super fun read that will give everyone the desire to be better and keep looking up. I highly recommend this book.

MY REVIEW
The second book in the Deadly Reunions series is fantastic. When a Heart Stops is a suspenseful book full of surprises and mystery.
The only thing is it was hard to follow along if you didn’t read the first book in the series. So it wouldn’t be a good stand alone book to read. I think it needed much more back story from the first book, but still find When a Heart Stops to be a splendid read.
Serena is really a fantastic person, whom loves family, friends and those less fortunate than herself. She isn’t a person who puts herself first before others. I like the way she has always cared for Dominic since they went to school together, but he always thought she was just a young kid. Now he sees her differently.
Dominic was wild in school, but with the help of an older mentor and friend he was showed the right path to take in life and turned himself around and now follows the Lord.
I was surprised at whom the serial killer was and quite intrigued by the whole story and it kept me glued to my seat to find the ending.
I would recommend this book to all of you suspense, mystery lovers.

ABOUT LISA MCKAY
Lisa still stumbles when people ask her about home. Raised in Australia, Bangladesh, the States, and Zimbabwe, she has also lived in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Croatia. She is currently living in Laos.

(How she got to Laos is a long story that began with writing letters to someone in Papua New Guinea named Mike and ended in marriage about a year later.)

In Australia, Lisa worked as a forensic psychologist with the police, in a maximum security men's prison, and on a child death review team. In Croatia, Lisa worked with a development organization as a stress management trainer. In Indiana, Lisa earned a masters degree in International Peace Studies at Notre Dame University. In Los Angeles, Lisa directed the Headington Institute's training and education programs, providing psychological and spiritual support services to humanitarian workers around the world. In Laos, while Mike is hard at work for a humanitarian organization, Lisa lies in a hammock by the Mekong River and drinks mango smoothies.

Well, sometimes, anyway. The rest of the time she is writing or working as a consultant. Lisa's first book, my hands came away red, was nominated for a Christy Award. Her essays and articles have appeared in a number of different magazines.

MY REVIEW
This is Lisa McKay’s second book and I really enjoyed it. Her first book My Hands Came Away Red, was fantastic.
In Love at the Speed of Email is a memoir that reads like fiction. You will get caught up in the amazing, fascinating life that Lisa leads and how she came to know her husband and their usual courtship and marriage. I believe marriage through email works because before email I met and married my husband of 30 years though letters. It works and is a great way to find out about your future mate. Like Lisa and Mike we also had a short courtship and God has blessed us.
I find it amazing how some people can travel and live in a different place every few years or so and seem to enjoy it, but that’s not for me. You will read many strange and exciting things that have happened to Lisa and how she got though them and moved on with her life.
God has blessed this couple and I know you would love to read their love story.
Lisa is a very witty person and will have you laughing at the strangest things. I’m sure she is a wonderful speaker and has her audience laughing and feeling comforted many times.
A book to read and one you will get simple enjoyment out of. I recommend this book.

ABOUT KAREN KINGSBURY
New York Times bestselling author Karen Kingsbury is America's favorite inspirational novelist, with more than 15 million books in print. Her Life-Changing Fiction has produced multiple bestsellers, including Leaving, Take One, Between Sundays, Even Now, One Tuesday Morning, Beyond Tuesday Morning, and Ever After, which was named the 2007 Christian Book of the Year. An award-winning author and newly published songwriter, Karen has several movies optioned for production, and her novel Like Dandelion Dust was made into a major motion picture and is now available on DVD. Karen is also a nationally known speaker with several women's groups. She lives in Washington with her husband, Don, their daughter and five sons.

MY REVIEW
Coming Home by Karen Kingsbury was a very emotional book.  It was full of great joy, sadness and peace with much tragedy.
Coming Home is the final book in the Baxter series. Which involved about 18 or so books. I was hoping for a very sweet, happy ending, but it wasn’t meant to be. I do think this ending was much better, full of heartache, pray and longing. I knew from reading about Coming Home that some kind of tragedy, but expected one much different.
The only part I didn’t care for in this book was the retelling of all of the sibling’s lives at their worse places in life and how they pulled through with God and their families. I know Karen probably did that to give those readers who didn’t read the original Baxter books back story, but it was like reading those books again. It wasn’t anything new. So I would have changed that part.
The title has so many meanings in this story and find each one so wonderful. You can go home in a number of ways.
A lot of readers don’t like the Baxter’s because they seem so perfect and close to God, but I like that and believe that there are people who are like that in real life. When I read a book I want to read about someone who is uplifting not someone who is always going through bad times and depend on themselves and not God.
So I recommend Coming Home to everyone. A great book to read if you’re a new Karen Kingsbury fan or been one for years.
